Robots are automatons, in other words they are automated. They are automatic devices. It is not at all clear how or where to draw a line or even attempt to draw a line between automation and robots or robotics.

Not so many millenia ago (e.g. the second millenium C.E. (Church of England hee hee hee)) robots were fictional creatures or creations. Nowadays though, robots are very much a reality. Not just a virtual reality but also an actual physically manifest technological reality. You can buy robots for home use. Robots have long been in industrial use. In fact the whole economy of Earth has been massively changed by the advent of industrial robots.
